The Web site, afterdeployment.org (AD), is the Department of Defense (DoD) response to a congressional mandate to develop a behavioral health Web portal focused on post-deployment problems. The site was created to provide mental health support for soldiers dealing with post traumatic stress disorder related to a deployment experience. AD provides soldiers with pre-clinical mental health support, engaging users with video training/testimonials, interactive activities self-paced workshops, self-assessments, and quizzes in a secure anonymous environment.
AD features twelve programs users can access anonymously. Users can take self-assessments with tailored feedback and recommendations, test their knowledge with user-friendly quizzes, view actual testimonials from service members and families, and participate in narrator-guided workshops.
While users can take advantage of the site without registering, they can also register for a more personalized experience. Registered users can track their progress through self-help workshops, review the results of their self-assessments and set personal options such as accessibility.
The After Deployment site provides users with the option to take a preliminary pre-clinical exam before beginning on their journey to self-help. This initial assessment can focus on a particular topic area or all of the topics covered on the site. Users are provided direction to self-help tools within the site based on their responses to the assessment questions.
The After Deployment site is fully compliant with Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act (http://www.access-board.gov/508.htm), providing screen-reader-friendly and low-bandwidth equivalents to multimedia pages, alternative text for images, and closed-captioning options. Users can choose between a workshop with sound, images and video or an entirely text workshop , with no loss of function. The independent consulting firm used to test the web portal we developed was amazed by Vigilant's sophistication in 508 compliance for such a multi-media rich site, and considers it to be one of the most 508-compliant Federal websites of its type.
